It’s safe to say that at the beginning of 2020, none of us saw a global pandemic coming. Luckily, for most of us here at clovio, work carried on as usual – we’re no strangers to working from home after all. But things were a little different for our most recent intern, Maxim. Just as he was about to start his internship in Budapest in early March, the spread of COVID-19 forced Maxim to return to his home in Belgium and carry out his 3-month internship remotely. In our latest interview, we asked him how he handled this transition and still managed to make the most of his internship in such unique circumstances.
Why did you decide to apply for an internship with clovio?
I first came into contact with clovio due to a school assignment for which we had to interview a startup company. I contacted Sander and set up a meeting in Budapest because clovio seemed like an interesting company in general. In our last year of school we had to do an international internship and my mind immediately jumped to clovio so I contacted Sander to ask if an internship was possible.
What was your role within clovio?
I worked as a student intern content writer. I mainly wrote content for Financus which reviewed and compared financial institutions. I also handled a small amount of social media marketing.
How did your internship in Hungary turn into a remote internship following an unexpected turn of events?
Due to COVID-19, Thomas More University had to force us to return to Belgium. The process was a bit difficult at the start but in the end not much changed since most of my work in Budapest was also done from the comfort of my apartment.
What does your ideal internship day look like?
I had a different idea of what working at clovio would be like, but it was a great experience nonetheless. An ideal day as an intern would look like this for me: I would get up early, handle some admin tasks, emails, etc. Afterwards I would move on to content writing to keep the tasks varied and the days a bit more structured. In the evenings, I would have liked to meet up with the team more, but due to the pandemic this turned out to be difficult.
How did you combine your internship with your studies and other commitments?
Time management was my main challenge while working for clovio. The combination of writing my bachelor thesis and working as an intern took some real structuring but in the end both of these tasks were completed successfully. So, I was able to ace my thesis and learn a lot working at clovio.
What was the most important skill you learned during your digital media internship?
I definitely improved my Dutch writing skills. In the beginning, I made a lot of grammatical mistakes, but I feel like I was able to improve on this significantly. I also improved my time management skills, but I feel like in this aspect there is still a lot of room for improvement.
What advice do you have for those who want to become a (remote) intern in online media?
Try to find a daily routine and stick to it. It was sometimes hard for me because I hadn’t always structured my days very well, and I think this was my main mistake. If you can find a schedule that works for you, you’ll really improve your time management.
